I had a wonderful experience traveling with KOMSTA to Mongolia. I am a premed student at the University of Washington, and I initially thought the trip would be a great chance to volunteer and travel to a new place. However, I gained much more than that. In addition to being able to contribute a small part to the KOMSTA team, I gained a new perspective on medicine. As a result, I am definitely considering pursuing further education in traditional oriental medicine after graduating from medical school. On the third or fourth day of our trip I became ill. I remember the only thing that made me feel better was acupuncture and herbal medicine. This helped solidify for me the true power of oriental medicine; I am now a strong believer and advocate. Thanks to the kindness and patience of the doctors, even with the language barrier, I learned a great deal during that week. When I become a physician, I will always remember how the doctors on the KOMSTA team took the time and care to really listen to each patient before diagnosing the problem.
This trip truly opened my mind not only to the importance of alternative medicine but also to the real meaning of happiness. I have never felt happier or more relaxed than when I was waking up to a beautiful view, horseback riding, and devoid of all electronics. I would like to thank the whole KOMSTA team for giving me the opportunity to travel with them. It was a once an a lifetime experience that I will never forget. I would specifically like to thank Dr. Jin for allowing me to come into his office every day to remove acupuncture needles and observe. I wouldn't hesitate to travel with KOMSTA in the future.
